Quick Summary

DetailInformation
Scheme NamePradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)
Premium Amount₹436 per year (Auto-debited between May 25 - May 31)
Benefit Amount₹2 Lakh to Nominee (On death due to ANY cause)
Eligibility Age18 to 50 Years
Key Restriction30-Day Lien period for natural deaths upon first enrollment

About the Scheme

While PMSBY (the ₹20 scheme) only covers accidents, the PMJJBY (₹436 per year scheme) is a pure-term life insurance policy. It provides a life cover of ₹2 Lakh to the nominee in case of the policyholder's death due to any reason (including heart attack, cancer, illness, natural causes, or accidents). The policy runs from June 1 to May 31 every year. The ₹436 is auto-debited directly from the savings account.

The Hidden Clause: The 30-Day "Lien Period"

Many families get their claims rejected because they don't understand the "Lien Period" rule. Here is exactly how it works:

  1. The Rule: When you enroll in PMJJBY for the very first time, a 30-day waiting period (lien period) applies.
  2. What it means: If the account holder dies of a natural cause (disease, heart attack) within the first 30 days of enrolling, the insurance company will reject the claim and pay nothing.
  3. The Exception: If the death happens within the first 30 days due to an ACCIDENT (like a car crash), the claim is payable. The lien only applies to natural deaths.

(Actionable Tip: If your policy lapsed last year because you didn't have ₹436 in your account, and you manually reactivated it this year, the 30-day lien period starts over again! Always keep auto-debit active).

Exact Claim Settlement Process

  1. Identify the Bank: Look at the deceased person's passbook to find the "PMJJBY ₹436" deduction. Approach that specific branch.
  2. No Police FIR Needed for Natural Death: Unlike PMSBY, if the person died of an illness, you do not need an FIR or post-mortem. A simple Municipal Death Certificate and doctor's cause of death is enough.
  3. Submit the Form: Download the Claim Form, attach the nominee's KYC and cancelled cheque, and submit it to the bank manager.
  4. Processing Time: The bank verifies the auto-debit and forwards it to LIC (or the partnered private insurer). Funds take about 30 to 45 days to reach the nominee's account.

Documents Required for Claim

  • Claim-cum-Discharge Form
  • Original Municipal Death Certificate
  • Bank Passbook/Cancelled Cheque of the Nominee
  • Aadhaar/PAN of the Nominee
  • (If Accidental Death during 30-day Lien: FIR and Post-Mortem are required to prove exception).

FAQs

I am 52 years old. Can I join this scheme?

No. New enrollments are only allowed for citizens aged 18 to 50. However, if you joined before turning 50, your life cover will continue (upon paying ₹436 annually) until you reach the age of 55.

Can I nominate someone who is not a blood relative?

Yes, but it slows down the claim process. Banks prefer the legal heir (spouse, children). If you nominate a non-relative, the bank may ask for an indemnity bond during the claim.

Does this scheme have a maturity value?

No. This is a "pure term" insurance. If you live past the age of 55, the policy ends, and you do not get the ₹436 premiums back.
