About the Scheme
PMJDY is the National Mission for Financial Inclusion. It allows anyone without a bank account to open a basic savings account with absolutely zero minimum balance requirements, bringing the poorest citizens into the formal banking system to receive direct government benefits (DBT).
High-Value Insider Info: The Insurance Trap & Overdraft Reality
Most people know about the free RuPay card and the insurance, but very few know the actual rules to claim them:
- The ₹2 Lakh Insurance Trap (Crucial Rule): If you die in an accident, your family gets ₹2 Lakh. However, your claim will be rejected if you have not used your RuPay debit card at an ATM, POS machine, or online within 90 days prior to the accident. Keeping the card locked in a cupboard makes the insurance invalid! (Note: UPI transactions do not count; you must use the physical card).
- The ₹10,000 Overdraft Reality: You cannot just open an account and ask for a ₹10,000 loan the next day. The account must be satisfactorily active for at least 6 months. It must be seeded with Aadhaar and have regular cash inflows (like NREGA wages or subsidy DBT). * The bank manager decides your limit. They may only sanction ₹2,000 initially.
- Inoperative Accounts: If you do not deposit or withdraw money for 2 years, your account is frozen ("inoperative"). The government does not mass-close these accounts, but you must visit the branch and do a KYC update to reactivate it to receive subsidies.
Eligibility Criteria
- Any Indian citizen aged 10 years or older.
- Should not already hold another savings bank account.
Exact Navigation Path: How to Open an Account
- You cannot open a fully-featured PMJDY account purely online.
- Visit any bank branch (SBI, PNB, HDFC, etc.) or a designated Bank Mitra (Business Correspondent).
- Ask for the "Account Opening Form for PMJDY".
- Documents: Provide your Aadhaar card. (If you don't have an Aadhaar or PAN, you can still open a "Small Account" with a self-attested photo and signature, but it comes with strict deposit/withdrawal limits until you submit official ID within 12 months).
