About the Scheme
As people age, they lose their vision, hearing, or ability to walk, making them completely dependent on their families. The Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) aims to restore dignity to poor senior citizens by providing them with high-quality physical aids and assisted-living devices completely free of cost. The scheme is entirely managed and implemented by ALIMCO (Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India), a government enterprise.
Exact Devices Provided
If an elderly person suffers from multiple disabilities (e.g., poor vision and cannot walk), the scheme will provide devices for both impairments. The devices include:
- Mobility: Wheelchairs, Walkers, Tripods/Quadpods, Crutches, Walking Sticks.
- Vision & Hearing: High-quality Spectacles and BTE (Behind The Ear) Hearing Aids.
- Dental: Complete or partial Artificial Dentures.
- (Note: ALIMCO also provides 1 year of free maintenance for these devices).
Eligibility & The ₹15,000 Rule
Who is eligible:
- Must be a Senior Citizen (60 years or above).
- Must belong to a BPL (Below Poverty Line) family.
- Hidden Clause: Even if you don't have a BPL card, you are eligible if you can prove your monthly income/pension from all sources is below ₹15,000.
Exact Process: How to Get the Devices
You cannot simply order these online. The RVY works strictly on a "Camp Mode" organized at the district level.
- Identification: The District Collector (DC) initiates the process. Keep an eye on local newspapers or ask the Gram Panchayat for upcoming "ALIMCO Assessment Camps".
- Assessment Camp: You must take the senior citizen to this camp. Government doctors and ALIMCO technicians will physically examine them to prescribe the exact device needed (e.g., taking an ear mold for a hearing aid or measurements for a wheelchair).
- Distribution Camp: A few weeks later, a massive distribution camp is held where the custom devices are handed over to the beneficiaries.
- Doorstep Delivery: For seniors aged 80 and above who are bedridden, the district administration often arranges for the devices to be delivered to their homes.
Documents Required
When attending the assessment camp, bring:
- Aadhaar Card (Mandatory for age and ID proof).
- Income Proof: BPL Ration Card, or a Tehsildar Income Certificate, or proof of receiving the Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension.
- Medical Certificate: (Optional; the camp doctors usually certify the disability on the spot).

FAQs
My grandfather is 75 but our family income is ₹30,000 per month. Can we pay for the ALIMCO wheelchair?
RVY is strictly a free scheme for those earning below ₹15,000/month. However, families above the income limit can purchase the same high-quality ALIMCO devices at subsidized rates directly from their official website or centers.
