Quick Summary

DetailInformation
Scheme NameAMRUT 2.0
MinistryMinistry of Housing and Urban Affairs
Target AreaAll ~4,800 Statutory Towns in India
Core Goal100% coverage of functional water tap connections to all households
Budget Scale~₹2,99,000 Crore

About the Scheme

AMRUT 2.0 is the heavy-lifting infrastructure scheme of urban India. While the "Smart Cities" mission focused on tech, AMRUT focuses on survival: Water and Sewage. The goal of AMRUT 2.0 is to make Indian cities "water secure." It mandates that every single household in all statutory towns across India must have a functional, piped tap water connection. For the 500 major cities, it also mandates 100% sewerage and septage management.

High-Value Insider Info: How It Works & Hidden Realities

  • Not a Free Water Scheme: AMRUT 2.0 funds the infrastructure (laying the pipes, building water treatment plants). It does not mean your monthly water bill will be zero. In fact, a hidden rule of AMRUT 2.0 funding requires local municipalities to levy strict "User Charges" to ensure they have the money to maintain the pipes long-term.
  • Outcome-Based Funding: The Central Government does not just give money to states blindly. AMRUT 2.0 operates on "Outcome-Based Funding." The municipality only gets the funds released when they prove that a functional tap has been installed in a citizen's house.
  • Circular Economy: A major push in 2026 is treating sewage water and selling it to local industries, ensuring fresh drinking water is reserved strictly for citizens.

Difference Between AMRUT 1.0 and AMRUT 2.0

  • AMRUT 1.0 (2015): Limited to only 500 major cities. Focus was basic infrastructure creation.
  • AMRUT 2.0 (2021-2026): Expanded to cover all 4,800+ towns in India. Focus shifted from just laying pipes to ensuring "Water Security" (rejuvenating lakes, recycling wastewater).

Exact Navigation Path: How to Apply for a Water Connection

Because AMRUT funds local municipal bodies, there is no central "AMRUT Portal" for a citizen to get a water tap.

  1. You must apply through your Urban Local Body (ULB) (Municipal Corporation, Nagar Palika, or Jal Board).
  2. Go to your state's centralized urban services portal (e.g., e-NagarSewa in UP, SUDA portals, or your city's specific Jal Board website).
  3. Select "Apply for New Water/Sewer Connection."
  4. Upload your property tax receipt, Aadhaar card, and building plan.
  5. The local authority, funded by AMRUT 2.0, will execute the connection.
