About the Scheme (2026 Reality Check)

The Smart Cities Mission is fundamentally different from schemes like PM-KISAN or PM Awas. It is an infrastructure and technology mission, not a direct cash-benefit scheme. The mission's active construction and project phase officially concluded in March 2025. As of 2026, the 100 selected cities are now operating in the "sustainability phase," utilizing the massive digital and physical infrastructure built over the last decade.

High-Value Insider Info: Citizen Benefits & Scam Warnings

  • The "Apply for Smart City" Scam: Because the government spent billions on this mission, many fake websites ask citizens to "Apply for Smart City Benefits" or "Register for Smart City Housing" for a fee. There is no individual application portal. The mission builds roads, parks, and CCTVs; it does not give cash or houses directly to citizens.
  • The ICCC (The Brain of the City): The biggest tangible result of the mission is the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) established in all 100 cities. It acts as the digital nerve center. If you see improved traffic lights, fast police response to accidents via CCTV, or instant alerts for waterlogging, it is all being controlled live from your city's ICCC.
  • Local Apps: To actually "use" the smart city features (like paying water bills, booking smart parking, or logging a municipal grievance), you must download your specific city's app (e.g., PuneConnect, Smart City Bhopal App), not a central government portal.

Smart Cities Mission vs. AMRUT (The Exact Difference)

Many people confuse these two urban missions. Here is the exact difference:

  • Smart Cities: Selected only 100 elite cities. Focuses on high-tech solutions (Wi-Fi, CCTVs, E-governance, area-based redevelopment).
  • AMRUT: Covers 500+ cities. Focuses entirely on basic plumbing—laying underground water pipes, building sewage treatment plants, and preventing flooding.

How to Access Services

  1. Do not search for a central "Smart City Login."
  2. Go to your local Municipal Corporation's official website.
  3. Look for the "E-Services" or "Smart City Citizen Portal" link specific to your city.
